Bringing supplements to production
As sports editor of the Tamworth Herald, a key part of my job has been to come up with ideas for supplements to being added value to the print product. This has included coming up with names, concept and content.
Among my success stories was Extra Time which was named Supplement of the Year at the 2015 Midland Media Awards.
A second pull-out, the Class of 89 was highly commended in the same category in 2019.
Herald Junior Football Stars was winner of the Value-Added Product of the Year at the 2008 Newspaper Society Circulation, Editorial and Promotions Awards.
My work at Central Independent Newspapers has involved writing news and sports stories as well as entertainment reviews and blogs.
Among my individual honours was a highly commended award for Journalist of the Year at the Midland Media Awards 2019.
These include blogs …
Human interest stories …
Page design skills
I have become adaptable to using various design programmes and currently use Adobe InCopy and InDesign Cs5.5
My role s a sports editor included writing, designing and proofreading more than 20 pages per week for different titles, working to several tight deadlines.
Social Media Skills
I have been a key member of a Tamworth Herald team which has driven traffic to the newspaper’s Facebook page, taking the number of likes on the page to more than 33,000. I believe I have developed a good understanding of the audience.
Among the ideas I came up with to increase interest in the page were nostalgia posts and ‘Did you know?’
As a journalist ‘on the ground’ I have also been able to capture video which I have felt would engage with readers as well as identify content which will attract interest.
